FRANKLIN — Summer: when the dull task of grocery shopping at the supermarket is transformed by taking the action outside.

Farmers markets are popping up all over metro Detroit, and Franklin residents will be the first to tell you they’ve got one of the most unique weekly open-air shopping experiences in town.

Market on the Green opened up two weeks ago, boasting more vendors than ever, with 15-20 produce, prepared foods, spice and giftware makers selling their goods under the shady canopy of Franklin Park.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Farmers Market will kick off its seventh annual season at the Packard Proving Grounds on Saturday, May 9. The market is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. every Saturday through October, rain or shine.

Market Manager Mary Anne Demo said the Shelby Farmers Market will host a slew of new vendors and events, as well as bring back some market staples.

ROCHESTER — The vibrant colors and flavors of Michigan’s growing season will soon make their way to downtown Rochester, officially signaling the arrival of spring.

The Downtown Rochester Farmers Market will open for its 16th season May 2 at the corner of East Third and Water Street, a block east of Main Street. The outdoor market will continue from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 31.

ROYAL OAK — Construction to add about 90 more spaces to the Farmers Market parking lot is expected to begin this week with a target completion date in September.

The $621,904 parking addition is scheduled to be open for vehicles before Labor Day weekend, in time for Arts, Beats & Eats.

City of Royal Oak Community Engagement Specialist Judy Davids said WCI Contractors Inc. will begin work to extend the existing parking lot at the market, located at 316 E. 11 Mile Road, further south.
