ROCHESTER HILLS/SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The east leg of the Dequindre Road/Auburn Road intersection will be closed Aug. 12 through early September for construction.

Craig Bryson, a spokesman for the Road Commission for Oakland County, said the closure is part of an ongoing Dequindre Road widening project from Utica Road to Collins Avenue on the border of Rochester Hills and Shelby Township.

“North and south traffic on Dequindre will still be open,” Bryson said. “Auburn Road, on the east side of Dequindre, will be closed … so they can put a new water main across Auburn at the intersection, as well as repave the east half of the intersection.”

The detour for Auburn Road through traffic is Dequindre Road to Hamlin Road to Ryan Road and  back to Auburn Road, and vice versa.

During the temporary closure, Bryson said access to homes and business property along Auburn Road will be maintained.

The overall project — which began May 18 — involves widening the road from two lanes to five lanes, adding new concrete curbs and traffic signals, improving drainage and storm sewers, and updating pedestrian crosswalks.

“The project has been going very well. They have been making very good progress. They’re on schedule, and traffic is moving fairly well, despite the fact that there is a major construction zone there,” Bryson said.

The overall project — which is slated for completion in late fall — will cost approximately $9.3 million, with 80% funded through a federal safety grant. Officials said the remainder will be shared by the Road Commission, the Macomb County Department of Roads, Rochester Hills and Shelby Township.

Rochester Hills Department of Public Services Director Allan Schneck said the project is progressing.

“The favorable weather, until recently, has really helped. It’s been dry, and the contractor has been able to work and get good production from the crews,” Schneck said. “The Road Commission for Oakland County is a great partner in projects that are under their jurisdiction, and we appreciate the partnership.”

This section of Dequindre Road carries approximately 18,110 vehicles, while Auburn Road carries approximately 11,800 vehicles, Road Commission officials said.
