Drunken Hazel Park man slugs beer while driving with kids

A 46-year-old Hazel Park man was charged with drunken driving and child endangerment after witnesses reportedly saw him drink a large can of beer as he drove with his three children at John R and Maple just before 7:30 p.m. March 14. 

Police stopped the vehicle, and they said they smelled a very strong odor of intoxicants from inside.

According to reports, the driver, Herbert Leonard Hardy, admitted to drinking, failed sobriety tests and blew a 0.15 blood alcohol content on a breath test.

He was arraigned in 52-4 District Court March 15 on charges of drunken driving, child endangerment and having open intoxicants in a vehicle. He pleaded not guilty. Bond was set at $2,500 or 10 percent.

His attorney could not be reached for comment.
