Troy police assisted the Michigan State Police in a search for a man who reportedly ran from his 2007 Chevy toward Oakland Mall after driving away from a traffic stop just before 11 a.m. Jan. 23.

The man reportedly eluded the Michigan State Police at a traffic stop on northbound Interstate 75 at 13 Mile Road.

According to the Michigan State Police, when the trooper stopped the driver for license plate and tinted window violations, the suspect pulled off onto the left shoulder.

When the trooper got out of her squad car and approached the suspect vehicle, the driver took off northbound, hitting several cones close to construction workers, according to police.

The Michigan State Police said the trooper did not pursue the vehicle after the stop because it was for a traffic violation only.

Police said the man got off the freeway at the 14 Mile Road east exit, drove over the center divider of 14 Mile Road and struck a vehicle. No one was hurt in the crash.

Witnesses reported to police that after the crash the man ran from his car toward Oakland Mall.

Troy police Sgt. Meghan Lehman said that Troy police assisted the Michigan State Police in a K-9 search for the suspect, but did not locate him. The suspect was described as a black man wearing a hoodie and black pants.

Police continue to investigate.
