ROCHESTER — Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve has brought thousands of daffodils to the greater Rochester area for the past 25 years, signaling to residents that spring isn’t far away.

Every year, the center sells around 20,000-30,000 of the bright yellow flowers through its Daffodils for Dinosaurs fundraiser, which raises funds for programming at the nature center.

“This year, we are shooting for 50,000 blooms. … The proceeds go to the preserve to help continue to bring quality environmental education to the residents of the Rochester area,” said Angela Fox, special event coordinator for Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve.

Those interested in preordering flowers this year must do so before March 14, and they have some options. They can contact Dinosaur Hill to preorder daffodils for themselves and pick them up at the center March 19-20, they can preorder a minimum of six bunches for $30 as a gift and let nature center staff deliver the flowers to any location in the 48307, 48306, 48309 or 48326 ZIP code areas March 19; or they can donate $5 to provide one bunch of daffodils to a participant of the Older Persons’ Commission’s Meals on Wheels program March 19 and 20.

“The feedback that we get back from our volunteer drivers, who take the bouquets to our clients, is that they are just thrilled to get them. They look forward to it every year. It brings a little bit of sunshine to them,” said Karen O’Rourke, volunteer manager of the Meals on Wheels program offered by the Older Persons’ Commission.

From March 20-22, Dinosaur Hill volunteers will be out selling daffodils at several Hollywood Market and Papa Joe’s locations in the Rochester area for the communitywide sale. Daffodils will be selling for $5 per 10-stem bunch.

The annual event is one of Dinosaur Hill’s three major annual fundraisers and typically brings in between $7,000 and $10,000 in revenue for nature center programming — not including the donations from event sponsors, who Becker said help underwrite the cost of the daffodils. This year’s sponsors include Neil King Physical Therapy Inc.; the Kiwanis Club of Rochester; Eugenia’s Third Street Hair Gallery; French Associates Inc.; Mattina, Kent & Gibbons, PC.; Kite Tutoring LC; the Rochester Downtown Development Authority; and The Erik Ambrozaitis Team.

Dinosaur Hill, 333 N. Hill Circle in Rochester Hills, is a nonprofit organization of more than 35 years that provides environmental education programs. For more information or to place an order, call (248) 656-0999, email daffodils@dinosaurhill.org or visit http://daffodils.dinosaurhill.org.
