MACOMB COUNTY/DETROIT — The Detroit Institute of Arts will be holding Macomb County Day on May 6, offering free round-trip bus rides to the museum for all county residents.

The service is part of County Days, offered twice a year for people living in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. County Days are made possible by millage support from tri-county residents, said DIA Program Manager Julie McFarland.

“We started in 2014, a year after the millage was approved,” said McFarland, adding that Oakland County Day was scheduled for the last weekend of April. “It’s a way for us to remove the barriers for people to get down here, those who may never have been and aren’t familiar with the area. This is a way to get acclimated to the area. And they can enjoy art with free admission and leave the driving to us.”

Visitors — children are invited, but must be accompanied by an adult — will be able to see “Thalassa,” a sculpture by New York street artist Caledonia “Callie” Curry, known as Swoon, which soars above the Woodward Avenue lobby, take docent-led tours of the African art collection, the Ancient Middle East gallery, the Dutch collection and the Inspired by Italy galleries. The DIA studio will also offer an art-making workshop for visitors.

The DIA is home to more than 60,000 works spanning from ancient times through the 21st century, from the first Van Gogh painting to enter a U.S. museum (“Self-Portrait,” 1887), to Diego Rivera’s world-renowned Detroit Industry murals (1932–33).

There are several dining options at the museum, including CaféDIA and Kresge Court, and the museum shop will be open with a selection of art-related items, many of which cannot be found in other area stores, McFarland said.

The Macomb County busing locations and schedules are:

• Sterling Heights Public Library, located at 40255 Dodge Park Road. The bus departs the library at 9:30 a.m. and leaves DIA at 2:30 p.m.

• Warren Community Center, located 5460 Arden Ave. The bus departs the community center at 10 a.m. and leaves DIA at 3 p.m.

Round-trip transportation and admission are free, but reservations are required. To reserve a spot, call (313) 833-4005 or visit tickets.dia.org.

Regular museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. General admission (excludes ticketed exhibitions) is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County residents and DIA members. For all others, the cost is $12.50 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 62 and older and $6 for kids ages 6-17. For membership information, call (313) 833-7971.
