CLAWSON — You know spring must be around the corner when securing Sundays for the community’s annual farmers market enters the discussion.

So while cabin fever has set in for Michiganders, City Council members unanimously approved the Clawson Chamber of Commerce schedule for the 2017 Clawson Farmers Market season during a meeting Feb. 9.

The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday, May 21 through Sept. 24.

“2017 looks to be an exciting year,” said Mayor Penny Luebs. “May 21st is our flower day, and we’re ready to welcome our farmers back with fresh fruits and vegetables and all of our vendors.”

Clawson Farmers Market Flower Day always kicks off the market season and is a well-attended activity.

“New this year, the market is requesting sponsorship for music and themed events,” Luebs said.

According to market officials, confirmed sponsored activities so far include an inflatable obstacle course presented by Clawson Youth Assistance on June 18 and July 2; an arts and crafts table presented by the Detroit Institute of Arts on Aug. 6 and 13; and a planetarium demonstration presented by Starlab on Aug. 20. Further details and more sponsored activities will be announced closer to the start of the season.

“Each week, we have a different activity for children and entertainment, making this market a great family outing,” Clawson Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mary Sames said in a letter to the council.

The annual market will remain in its usual spot on Custer Avenue from north of Elmwood Avenue to the circle at Clawson City Park.

“The farmers market brings numerous residents and visitors to the park, as well as a variety of vendors,” Sames stated.

Anyone interested in sponsoring an activity or being a vendor this year may visit the Clawson Farmers Market Facebook page or call the Clawson Chamber of Commerce at (248) 435-6500.
