EASTPOINTE — The 42nd annual Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner is set for Sept. 30 with a new group of about 20 businesses and individuals to be honored.

According to Danielle Baer, executive director for the chamber, the event lets the organization highlight some of the people who contribute greatly to the community.

“It’s a way to honor citizens and businesses in the community that give back a lot to the community,” Baer said.

She said the chamber solicited nominations from members and from its Facebook page for most categories.

“Nominations have been rolling in,” she said. “We have a small committee of four of us, and we go through the nominations and pick the winner.”

For the police officer, firefighter and teacher of the year awards, Baer said the nominees’ administrators and peers select the winners through their own internal processes.

Eastpointe Director of Public Safety John McNeilance said he consults with the various bosses in the police and fire departments, as well as with his deputy chiefs, to determine who among their numbers showcased “exemplary service” over the past year.

“There’s usually more than one, so it’s not always an easy decision,” McNeilance said. “But we’ll look over their work for the past year, talk to their bosses, and then make a selection.”

The program is scheduled at the Eastpointe Manor, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Baer said there is a buffet-style dinner planned, and event tickets are being sold for $25 per person. Award recipients and a guest are able to dine for free, and Baer said, historically, the event draws about 100 to 150 people.

Interested parties must RSVP with the chamber by Sept. 25 to attend. Call (586) 776-5520 to RSVP.
