WARREN — There is a vacancy on the Van Dyke Board of Education.

Board President Jim Brinkey resigned his position, effective Oct. 19. Brinkey had served on the school board for eight years.

“It was time to step aside,” he said. “I appreciate the rest of the board and their help with me the past eight years and the opportunity to serve the community. I really enjoyed it. It was a learning experience. I enjoyed showing up at board meetings and interacting with the students and the staff at all the events I attended.”

Those events included school open houses, sporting events, concerts and Michigan Association of School Board conferences.

“That’s something that won’t be forgotten,” Brinkey said. “I am turning that over to somebody else now.”

District officials are seeking applications for the current vacant position. According to school officials, an individual will be appointed to fill the vacant position until the November 2016 election. Once appointed, the term of office will last until Dec. 31, 2016.

Interested candidates must submit a letter explaining why they wish to serve on the board and their qualifications for the position. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and a registered voter of Van Dyke Public Schools.

For any questions concerning the role and responsibilities of a board member, contact the Office of the Superintendent at (586) 758-8333.
