Eastbound Interstate 94 is shut down at 11 Mile Road while Michigan State Police investigate a crash that claimed the life of a one-year-old boy.

According to Michigan State Police Metro Detroit on Twitter, troopers were dispatched to a serious crash on the eastbound side of the freeway, near Martin Road in St. Clair Shores, at 6 a.m. Dec. 10.

The preliminary investigation has uncovered that a van was traveling in the left center lane when it moved into the left lane and rear-ended a passenger car.

The driver of the van, as well as the driver and passenger of the car, were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. According to tweets from Michigan State Police, the passenger in the car was a one-year-old boy. Police have confirmed that he was killed in the crash, although he was properly restrained in a car seat at the time.

According to the Michigan State Police, a 37-year-old man from Toledo is allegedly at fault in the crash and has been taken into custody. The investigation is still ongoing and will be forwarded to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office for review.

Earlier this morning, the Michigan State Police were wrapping up the investigation and tow trucks were on the scene of the crash. The freeway, which had been closed throughout the investigation, was reopened at 9:30 a.m.
