The calendar has turned to October, which means there are only three weeks left in the 2018 prep football regular season.

Football teams across the state are starting to believe their playoff dreams can become reality, while others need to take care of business if they hope to play into the postseason. Six wins ensures a team of a playoff spot. A 5-4 mark can get you in if you’ve played a strong schedule and there are not enough six-win teams to fill out the field.

In this edition of Macomb Mashups, we’ll look at several Week 7 games featuring teams with playoff aspirations and what this week means for particular teams.

We start with a matchup between city rivals.

Warren Woods Tower (6-0, 3-0 Macomb Area Conference Gold Division) at Warren Fitzgerald (3-3, 2-1 MAC Gold) — 1 p.m. Oct. 6

With a perfect start to the season, Tower has secured its second straight playoff berth. Fitzgerald must win out for its school-record run of playoff appearance — four straight — to continue.

St. Clair Shores South Lake (3-3, 2-1 MAC Silver) at Madison Heights Madison (6-0, 3-0 MAC Silver) — 7 p.m. Oct. 5

After a 3-1 start, South Lake has lost two straight, putting the team in must-win situations the rest of the regular season. Madison will play into the postseason for the 13th straight year.

Macomb Dakota (5-1, 3-1 MAC Red) at Romeo High (5-1, 3-0 MAC Red) — 7 p.m. Oct. 5

Because of the schedules they’ve played, each of these squads could probably lose out and still make the postseason. Both teams would love a win here, as each embarks on tough three-game stretch to end the season. Dakota ends the regular season against three teams (Romeo, Utica Eisenhower, Macomb L’Anse Creuse North) with a combined 12-6 record. Romeo ends the season against Dakota, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley and Grosse Pointe South, which have a combined mark of 17-1.

Sterling Heights High (0-6, 0-3 MAC Gold) at St. Clair Shores Lake Shore (5-1, 3-0 MAC Gold) — 7 p.m. Oct. 5

This could be a big week for Lake Shore. The Shorians could win a sixth straight game for the first time since 2009. A victory over Sterling Heights would put Lake Shore into the playoffs for the first time since 2009. See www.candgnews.com Oct. 5 for a full recap. Macomb Lutheran North (5-1, 2-1 Catholic High School League Intersectional Division) at Royal Oak Shrine (3-3, 1-2 CHSL Intersectional 2) — 1 p.m. Oct. 6

Lutheran North needs one win to go back to the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Shrine beat Lutheran North 28-7 the last time the teams matched up in 2016.
