ROYAL OAK — At approximately 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, a 53-year-old Berkley man was struck by an SUV while crossing northbound Woodward Avenue, south of Catalpa Drive.

Lt. Keith Spencer, of the Royal Oak Police Department, said the Berkley man, identified as Daniel Klein, was coming from the Trader Joe’s shopping center, crossed outside of designated crosswalks and was struck in one of the left lanes.

The 18-year-old Royal Oak man driving the SUV stopped at the scene and was cooperative with police. Spencer said police do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the incident.

“The pedestrian was transported to Beaumont Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” Spencer said.

Spencer said Royal Oak police closed down three lanes of northbound traffic from 11 Mile Road for a couple of hours while Royal Oak officers and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office accident investigation team conducted their investigation.

“Follow the signals and use the sidewalks and crosswalks,” Spencer advised. “As drivers, you should also be looking out.”
