MACOMB TOWNSHIP — A couple of public safety organizations are coming together in the name of friendly competition.

The first annual “Battle of the Badges” benefit hockey game will take place between the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington Township Fire Department  at Suburban Ice Macomb April 27.

Tickets cost $10 and all proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tickets are available at the door, and children 5 and under are free.

The game starts at 6:30 p.m.

Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Renee Yax said the goal of the game is simply to raise money for the hospital.

St. Jude’s is a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases, particularly leukemia and other cancers. Consistent with the vision of its founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.

“This is a great family event for little cost,” Yax said. “A contribution to a charity that helps fight childhood diseases.”

She added that the children’s hospital was chosen due to its reputation as a charity and the fact that they help children and their families.

If people can’t attend, they can still donate at fundraising.stjude.org/battle_of_the_badges. Yax said the organizations are aiming to raise $10,000.

In addition to the hockey game, the fundraiser features a 50-50 raffle, multiple basket raffles and chuck-a-puck.

“Rubber pucks can be purchased for $5 for three, or $2 each,” Yax said. “Each puck has a number on it. During the second intermission, the pucks gets thrown onto the ice, by the purchaser, to a designated area. The person who gets the puck closest to the designated area wins. There are prizes for the top three.”

First place gets a Thin Blue Line custom-made wooden flag, second place a Buffalo Wild Wings basket and third place a Battle of the Badges T-shirt.

Some of the items that will be raffled off include 50-50 cash drawings, hockey equipment, golf bags, restaurant gift cards, gift baskets and custom-made cornhole games.

Basket raffles include household items, treats from Westview Orchards in Washington Township, restaurant gift cards, lottery tickets and salon items.

This year marks the first time that the Sheriff’s Office has partnered up with the Fire Department for the hockey game.

“Our deputies work out of the fire hall in Washington Township and its traditionally always been a friendly rivalry between police and fire,” Yax said.

At press time, there were 30 confirmed participants for the game. Suburban Ice Macomb is located at 54755 Broughton Road in Macomb Township.
