Altercation at basketball court ends with fatal shooting

ROSEVILLE — The Roseville Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that took place Oct. 20 at Basketball City on Eastland Street, near Groesbeck Highway and 12 Mile Road.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. at the indoor basketball facility. According to police, an altercation occurred over a basketball game and one individual left the building after the confrontation had been broken up by other patrons. 

Investigators said this person then returned a short time later with a firearm and pointed it at one of the individuals involved in the earlier dispute. A third individual who police said is a valid concealed pistol license holder then produced their own weapon and there was a brief exchange of gunfire. The individual who had left the building to retrieve the gun was hit and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The CPL holder was taken into custody by police for questioning, and police said the investigation was ongoing as of the evening of Oct. 20.
