Animal shelter to host bake sale for fallen deputy

PONTIAC — When it comes to the big things in life — like dealing with the senseless death of a respected member of law enforcement — it takes a village to make it through.

When news broke that Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Overall was the victim of an alleged homicide on Thanksgiving Day, many in the community wanted to do their part to help the family, and the department, pick up the pieces.

That includes the team — on two legs and four — at the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center. They will welcome guests to their brand-new building on the county campus Dec. 16 for a bake sale to benefit the family of the fallen deputy.

“We’re asking the public to come out to support Deputy Overall’s family, who are facing the many challenges that come with losing a loved one,” Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said in a prepared statement. “When the baked goods sell out, the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center will certainly accept donations for Deputy Overall’s family.”

The event will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. that day, and shelter manager Bob Gatt said it’s the least they can do for the family.

“The Oakland County Animal Shelter works closely with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office on a daily basis. Our animal control officers are deputized. Oakland County deputies are in our building every day,” Gatt explained. “Our entire staff feels a special connection with each and every deputy and wanted to do something to be part of the community’s outreach of sympathy and assistance shown to Deputy Overall’s family.”

As an extra draw, the shelter will also host a Christmas bazaar that day, with more than 30 local crafters and businesses on-site selling a wide range of gift items, from ornaments to welded art, woodwork, essential oils and, of course, pet-themed goods.
