Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed a 4-year-old boy shoot himself in the parking lot of the Kroger store at Crooks Road and South Boulevard just after 1:15 p.m. Nov. 6 to contact them.

Police said the dispatch center received several calls reporting a shooting at the store.

Officers determined that a 4-year-old got into the back seat of the vehicle while his mother and 10-year-old brother loaded groceries into the trunk.

The 4-year-old reportedly found the Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun in the unlocked center console of the car, a blue 2000 Ford Mustang with a white top, and shot himself.

The bullet entered his left side, just above the waist, and exited through his left thigh, according to reports.

Police said the gun was loaded with 16 rounds and there was no trigger lock on the weapon.

There was no further information available on the boy’s condition Nov. 6.

Anyone who saw the incident can call Troy Police at (248) 524-3477.
