ROYAL OAK — Royal Oak High senior Gil Ybarra formally signed to play hockey at Lawrence Tech University on March 7.

"I'm really excited," said Ybarra. "It's going to be a great experience. (I'll) be able to meet some new people."

The 2015-16 season was Ybarra's first as a Raven. He previously played for the Mount Clemens Wolves travel team.

"I'm very proud," said Ybarra's mom, Debbie. "He's been playing hockey since he was little, so working all the way up to this is scary, exciting."

Ybarra has a younger brother, Grant, a junior who also plays hockey for Royal Oak.

"It's something new for us," said Debbie Ybarra. "(He's) our first to go to college."

Ybarra said he is considering pursuing construction management while at Lawrence Tech. He is unsure of what position he'll play on the ice, but said right now, it's between center and wing.
