PLEASANT RIDGE/ROYAL OAK/TROY — A 22-year-old Troy man has been charged for allegedly killing his mother after a family dinner on Thanksgiving.

On Nov. 25, George Michael Harry II was arrested on Woodward Avenue under the Interstate 696 underpass after local authorities received multiple reports of shots fired in the area.

According to the Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak police departments and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Royal Oak began receiving 911 calls at approximately 10:30 p.m. about a car crash and possibly shots fired. Pleasant Ridge Sgt. Rob Ried said police responded to northbound Woodward, where they found the vehicle crash and an unresponsive female in the front seat who had suffered head trauma and was bleeding.

“Our officer didn’t know anything besides there was a crash and trauma,” Ried said. “He pulled her out and started CPR.” The woman later was identified as Sonya Harry, 52, of Southfield, and the mother to George Michael Harry II.

As the Pleasant Ridge officer conducted lifesaving measures, he, along with Royal Oak police, heard shots fired to the north of the scene. Royal Oak officers found the active shooter, allegedly Harry II, firing at oncoming vehicles on the road.

“The passenger in that vehicle (Harry II) wound up shooting (his mother) in that vehicle,” Ried said. “He got out of the car after the crash and … started walking north on foot and began shooting the passing vehicles.

“As these people were pulling up to him, they saw a man covered in blood and thought it was from the crash and were pulling up to help him,” Ried continued. “As they would get close to him, he started shooting at the cars.”

According to a press release from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened not long after Harry II and his mother left a family gathering in Detroit.

“As she drove northbound on Woodward Avenue in Pleasant Ridge, Harry — who was a passenger in the rear seat of the Ford Edge — fired a single shot from point blank range from a 9 mm handgun to his mother’s head,” the release states.

Three vehicles were hit by bullets allegedly fired by Harry II, with a 43-year-old Ferndale woman being struck in the thigh. She was taken to the hospital and has since been released.

Harry II was caught by Royal Oak police and taken into custody without incident. His mother, found unresponsive by officers, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our officer did CPR for 13 minutes until medical could get in there and the scene was safe for them. They continued lifesaving measures till it was called,” Ried said.

Lt. Al Carter, of the Royal Oak Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, said the initial shooting took place in Pleasant Ridge as the vehicle traveled northbound along Woodward Avenue. After the suspect left the crashed vehicle and ran up the embankment, Carter said, the suspect began firing shots within the boundaries of the city of Royal Oak.

“He began shooting at vehicles that were stopping to render aid or were just trying to figure out what was going on,” Carter said. “Initially, there was a lot of confusion about whether it was a road rage scenario.”

Harry II was arraigned in the 44th District Court before Magistrate Donald Chisholm and charged with open murder, five counts of attempted murder, and six counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. His next court date is a probable cause conference Dec. 10.

Carter explained that the five counts of attempted murder stemmed from the fact that the bullets struck three vehicles, two of which contained a single occupant and one that contained a mother, father and a baby.

“At this time, we don’t have a motive,” Carter said.

The court had not listed an attorney for Harry II as of press time.
