SOUTHFIELD — Those looking for some family Halloween fun will have the opportunity to grab some candy and meet some spooky characters with a pair of events put on by the Southfield Parks and Recreation Department.

The department will have locals coming to their Boo at the Burgh event Oct. 23-24 and the Book and Boo program Oct. 31.

Boo at the Burgh will be held at Burgh Historical Park, while Book and Boo will take place at Bedford Woods Park. Both events will include socially distanced trick-or-treating, among other things.

The cost for both events is $5 for residents and $10 for nonresidents. One adult must be present per family, and everyone must have a ticket.

Tickets can be purchased by calling (248) 796-4620 visiting www.cityofsouthfield.com/departments/parks-recreation.

“It’s essentially trick-or-treating in our parks with a beautiful background,” youth programmer Holly Graves said. “We just hope that people can get out of their houses in this tough time.”

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the events will be a little different compared to previous years. The department is doing everything it can to ensure everyone in attendance is remaining safe, according to the city.

While following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, the events will also have time slots for participants to sign up for. Slots are available on a first come, first served basis.

The time slots for the Boo at the Burgh event are 5:30-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 23, and 3:30-4:30 pm., 5:30-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 24. The event is targeted for ages 5-13.

The Book and Boo has time slots of 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m., and it is targeted at ages 2-10.

“We’re going to enforce social distancing, and masks are required at the events,” Graves said. “All of our staff will also be wearing masks and gloves when handing out treats. We will also have hand sanitizer stations available.”

Graves said she expects the events to reach capacity, and she hopes people in attendance can enjoy the parks and what the staff has put together.

Southfield Parks and Recreation marketing analyst Stephanie Kaiser is also excited to see what comes of the Halloween events and believes events like this are able to showcase exactly what the department and city parks have to offer.

“It shows off our great parks. I mean, the Burgh is just a beautiful park,” Kaiser said. “With our Book and Boo event, we actually picked a park that probably not many people know about, but we thought we would highlight it and bring attention to it.”
