SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The winner has been named in the Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department’s new Halloween home decorating contest.
Michelle Kustarz, of Shelby Township, won the contest with her decorated home called “Horror on Hampton Drive.”
For the contest, all participants had to do was email a photo or two of their Halloween-themed homes to see if they could get the most votes in the contest. Homes could be spooky, scary, funny or fabulous.
The contest ran throughout the month of October until Oct. 30.
Kustarz’s home featured a giant skeleton and graveyard decorations. She also displayed a creepy arch with a cemetery sign.
Kustarz said her family decorates every year. When she learned about the contest, she thought she would enter.
“A neighbor posted that Shelby was hosting a contest, so I figured I would enter our house. What I found the most fun was how friends, family and neighbors supported us. On Halloween, we had neighbors saying they voted for us; it definitely brought us together as a community. It was fun to share our Halloween house,” she said.
A Visa gift card for $25 was given to the contest winner.
Kustarz said the contest was simple and just required some decorating and pictures.
“We love decorating, so we would enter again,” she said.
Pam Marshall helped with community relations on the township’s home decorating contest and a pumpkin carving contest.
“We had some great entries for both contests, and it was impressive to see the creativity and talent that was brought to them,” she said.
Mike Adams, township sports/recreation coordinator, said the contest was great for being its first year.
“I was very pleased with the turnout for being the first year doing this, and you can tell the participants love decorating their houses and really get into the Halloween spirit,” said Adams.
The Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department is hoping to host a Halloween house decoration contest again next year.
