CLINTON TOWNSHIP — At press time, the Clinton Township Police Department was working to determine who recently fired multiple gunshots near a busy intersection.

Police Capt. Richard Maierle said Aug. 3 that the shootings occurred at about 10:38 a.m. July 31, in the area of 17 Mile and Garfield roads.

He said an officer was driving a squad car and stopped at a red light when he heard shots fired, in the vicinity of a shopping plaza on the northwest corner of the intersection at Garfield and 17 Mile.

“There was a lot of traffic in the area and (the officer) heard tires screeching,” Maierle said.

Surveillance video footage provided by businesses in that area was reviewed. Police believe the two vehicles involved were a maroon Kia Optima and a white Nissan Armada.

Maierle said at least seven bullet casings from a .45 handgun were recovered at the scene. No weapons were recovered.

“We didn’t know really where the shots came from,” he said.

Kelley Powell posted a photo of the damage done to her vehicle in a community Facebook group. She said she was driving with her husband when the rear hatch of her vehicle was hit by one of the bullets.

“We were just driving by on Garfield, coming up to the light on 17, and heard the gunshots,” Powell said. “My husband yelled at me to go through the red light because there was gunshots and there was a police officer on the other side of the light who pulled into (a parking lot), so we pulled behind him.”

The following day, on Aug. 1, police checked the area and located the Kia Optima involved. The driver of the vehicle was reportedly fixing a flat tire.

“Apparently, the tires had been shot out,” Maierle said.

The owner of the vehicle reportedly told police he had been in a dispute with the driver of the Nissan — who was believed to be in the area.

Maierle said the Kia owner was “not real forthcoming” about what happened the previous day.
