HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Start the day with candy and end it with popcorn.

Harrison Township Parks and Recreation is bringing back its popular HallowPalooza Oct. 16 with trunk-or-treating in the early afternoon and a drive-in movie that night.

Local businesses, community groups and residents are sponsoring trunks, which they will decorate and then use to pass out treats to local children in costume from noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Tucker Park. Residents are asked to register for the event at harrison-township.org.

Harrison Township Trustee Paula Rose said they instituted sign-ups for specific time slots in 2020 in response to COVID-19. It worked out well, she said, and the time slots will remain in use this year.

“It helps us spread out the crowds,” she said.

With four times to choose from — noon, 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. — there are plenty of opportunities for Harrison Township families to come trick-or-treat around the parking lot and then enjoy cider and doughnuts, along with a bounce house provided by Bumpers Landing.

“It’s super popular,” Rose said. “It’s just community involvement, really. Free stuff for our residents. Just a way to give back.”

Later that same day, registered residents can come to Tucker Park for a Wheels and Reels movie night from 7 to 9 p.m., during which “The Nightmare Before Christmas” will be shown. Rose said participants will get to view the movie from their vehicles while listening to the audio on an FM station.

“Despite how cold or hot it might be, they’re comfortable in their own cars,” she said.

Space is limited so that everyone can see the movie from where they are parked, so residents must sign up at harrison-township.org for the free event. Each registered vehicle will get a bag of popcorn.

Tucker Park is located at 27100 Ballard St. For more information, visit harrison-township.org.
