TROY — A fire at the Belle Tire store at 1650 W. Maple Road, near Crooks Road, collapsed the roof Feb. 4.

Troy police on patrol spotted flames leaping from the roof just before 7:45 p.m. that night.

The store was closed for business at the time.

Firefighters worked to enter the second level of the store, where tires are stockpiled, according to a press release.

This fuel load created thick, black smoke and generated higher than average heat levels, with some of the heat dissipating through the opening in the roof,  according to the press release.

Fire crews could not quickly locate the source of fire due to rising heat levels and thick smoke.

Firefighters were removed from the building to start a defensive operation, in which firefighters work from the outside of a building to extinguish a blaze, according to the release.

Within 30 minutes, the roof started to collapse into the building, according to the release.

Crews reportedly spent several hours extinguishing the flames and locating hot spots.

According to the release, the Troy Streets and Drains Department helped firefighters with excavation equipment to open the building, which allowed firefighters to extinguish the fires under the roof without having to enter under the collapsed structure.

Fire officials said in the release that due to the extent of the damage, it will take some time to determine the cause of the blaze. The business is a total loss, according to the release.

The Troy Building Department was notified, and no one is allowed back into the building until the investigation is finished.

Maple Road, between Crooks Road and Maplelawn Drive, was closed during the fire to assist with the water supply.

Final damage estimates were incomplete at press time. Belle Tire officials could not be reached for comment at press time.
