CLINTON TOWNSHIP/MACOMB TOWNSHIP — The grand opening of the new Clinton-Macomb Public Library, located on Broughton Road south of 25 Mile Road, has been pushed to late summer 2021.

When officials held a groundbreaking ceremony in May 2019 at the site of the future library, the plan was for it to open in fall 2020. Then in fall 2019, officials predicted it would open in spring 2021.

Due to COVID-19, construction stopped for about a month.

“We’re back to full swing on building,” Clinton Macomb Public Library Director Larry Neal said. “The walls are starting to go up and structural steel for the roof is on site. It’s starting to look like a building.”

Neal said development of the library is past the riskiest part of the building process, which is initially digging in the ground.

The current North Branch, located at 24 Mile and Romeo Plank roads, has approximately 10,000 visits per month and has begun to outgrow the space available. The proposed building will be 28,485 square feet, twice the size of the current North Branch, which opened in 2001.

Some highlights of the new library include six small study rooms, three large study rooms, a community common gathering space, and USB outlets at most seating locations.

The 7.5-acre property where the library will be situated was gifted to CMPL by the township in November 2018. The project is funded through 30-year bonds with 3% interest, paid out of the library millage.

The project architect is Quinn Evans Architects and the construction management firm is McCarthy & Smith. The library’s construction cost is an estimated $18.5 million.
