The North American International Auto Show’s exhibits and displays have left Detroit’s Cobo Center until next year, but some local dealerships say the intense public interest has made an impact on selling award-winning vehicles in the showroom.

At the most recent auto show in January, the Volkswagen Golf won the award of 2015 North American Car of the Year, and the Ford F-150 took North American Truck/Utility of the Year. The announcement was made at a Jan. 12 press preview day.

The awards’ official website says the decisions were made by an independent group of 57 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada. The journalists judged the vehicles based on safety, value, design, innovation and other attributes.

Last year’s Car of the Year was the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, and last year’s Truck/Utility winner was the Chevrolet Silverado.

A sales manager at Suburban Volkswagen in Troy said customers have recently mentioned the auto show, and he said Volkswagen Golf sales have increased. He added that a lot of people who look for the Golf are Volkswagen customers or enthusiasts.

And he said the vehicle’s build quality is a top selling point.

“It’s got a turbocharged engine,” he said. “It’s more of a driver’s car.”

According to Roy Williams, General Sales Manager at Avis Ford in Southfield, he has recently seen a lot of customer interest in the F-150 following the truck’s victory at the auto show.

Williams explained that the F-150 has been a mainstay at Ford for “well over 30 years,” and it has had a long streak of being the best-selling truck in the country.

“They’re coming in, and I’m selling them,” he said. “We anticipate higher-than-normal truck sales and SUV sales due to the lower gas prices.”
