ROCHESTER — Caring for someone who experiences the world differently can make ordinary days feel unpredictable. For many caregivers, it can feel isolating and overwhelming.
At Flourishing Lives, families find steady support and guidance, including practical strategies they can use right away. The clinic provides pediatric and adult occupational therapy and pediatric speech therapy focused on lasting progress.
Clinical Director Sheena Patel shared that the practice fosters collaboration, ensuring families feel supported and actively involved in their child’s progress. “We are very holistic in nature,” she explained. “Every parent or caregiver comes into every session. It’s powerful when a parent, child and therapist truly connect.”
The process typically starts with an evaluation and a customized treatment plan. Depending on needs, more than one appointment per week may be recommended. Sessions are play-based and child-led, with therapists building activities around a child’s interests to support regulation, coordination and participation in everyday routines. “We’ve found that meeting the child where they are through play can create huge, meaningful connections and growth,” Sheena explained.
Therapists work with infants and children who may be struggling with milestones or developmental delays, as well as clients navigating regulation or sensory needs. Sheena noted that the clinic commonly helps clients overcome challenges such as meltdowns or dysregulation, motor coordination difficulties and feeding issues. For adults, occupational therapy may focus on goals tied to daily life, including sleep, stress, routines, emotions and executive functioning.
The clinic also welcomes collaboration with a client’s broader support system, from grandparents to other providers, to help strategies carry over beyond each session. “Collaboration is huge here,” Sheena shared. “It truly takes a village.”
Success is seeing real-life change—the kind families can feel at home and see in day-to-day routines. That can open doors to more independence and socialization that once felt out of reach. “For one family, it’s a smoother morning routine, and for another, it’s being able to play with others,” Sheena explained. It can also mean a child is more willing to join activities, handle group settings and engage with peers.
