ST. CLAIR SHORES — A suspect has been taken into custody as Michigan State Police continue to investigate the death of a 17-year-old girl found with a gunshot wound on Interstate 94 in St. Clair Shores early Oct. 14.

On Oct. 19, Michigan State Police said two search warrants were executed in the city of Southfield as part of the ongoing investigation. Two suspects were initially taken into custody, but one was later released.

“The second suspect has been lodged pending prosecutors’ review of the investigation report for a charging decision,” the Michigan State Police said in an update posted to Twitter.

A later update on Oct. 20 confirmed Macomb County prosecutors authorized a two-count warrant for a 20-year-old man from Southfield in connection with what the Michigan State Police called a homicide near I-94 and Eight Mile Road. An arraignment was expected to take place in the 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores on Oct. 21.

According to an earlier Twitter post by the Michigan State Police Second District, at approximately 7:45 a.m. Oct. 14, troopers responded to the area of eastbound I-94 and Nine Mile Road after dispatchers received a report about a dead female on the freeway.

Initially, investigators reported that the female had suffered head trauma, but it was later released that she had a gunshot wound.

The victim has been identified as a Detroit resident. Her family has been notified, but her name was not released.

A Michigan State Police update posted to Twitter on Oct. 17 stated that detectives were continuing to work through evidence linked in the murder of the young woman.

“We believe this homicide occurred at 3:45 a.m. when a shots fired call came in,” the update stated.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the persons involved is asked to call the Michigan State Police at (248) 584-5740.
