WEST BLOOMFIELD — Their chances to earn a win, or even a tie, were many.
The results, though, eluded the West Bloomfield High girls soccer team in a 1-0 loss to Clarkston High earlier this spring.
The Lakers will get a second chance at it when the district tournament begins, and coach Jason Clark and his girls can’t wait.
“It’s going to be a fairly even game, like the first one was,” Clark said. “We had so many chances in that one that we didn’t capitalize on. It came down to a corner kick that they got us on.”
The teams meet again at 3 p.m. May 30 at Clarkston Junior High in the opening round of the Milford High Division 1 state tournament.
“It’s going to depend on what team shows up for us,” Clark said. “We’re not looking for revenge as much as we want to play a good game and make the most of what we’re given.”
Missing out on chances has plagued the Lakers, who were 3-7-5 on the season at press time.
“We’ve lost seven, but with five ties, you can see how close we are,” Clark said. “We’ve been in every single game we’ve played.”
There is some other local flavor in the Milford district.
Walled Lake Northern plays Milford at 7:30 p.m. May 30 at the host site, while Waterford Kettering travels to play at Waterford Mott at 7 p.m. that same day. The winners face one another at a time to be determined June 1 at Milford.
Walled Lake Central travels to White Lake Lakeland at 7:30 p.m. May 30. The victor takes on the West Bloomfield-Clarkston winner at a time to be determined June 1 at Milford. The district final is at 6 p.m. June 2 at Milford.
“We’re looking forward to it, but we’re taking it one game at a time,” Clark said. “We’re confident we can get in here and focus on getting better each game to go on a run.”
Walled Lake Western drew a bye in the opening round of the Division 1 Northville High district. The Warriors face Novi High or South Lyon High at 7 p.m. June 1 at Northville.
The other side of the bracket features Farmington Hills Mercy, Northville, Livonia Stevenson and North Farmington. The final is at noon June 3.
