Warren Woods Tower’s softball season came to an end following a loss to St. Clair Shores Lakeview 7-2 in the championship game of the district tournament June 4.

Tower defeated Roseville 10-2 earlier in the day to advance to the championship round of the tournament.

Their season may be over, but not before the Titans laid claim to a fourth consecutive league championship after winning the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title.

Tower coach Lance Sell appreciates the effort his team put forth in order to realize its goal.

“I’m very proud of my girls,” he said. “They worked extremely hard. We wanted a district title, and we were just a little short this year. But overall, I’m very happy with the girls. Put it in perspective, 12-0 in the league, fourth year conference champs, 24-8 overall record — not too bad.

“I was looking back over our last four seasons — two in the Silver, two in the Gold — we were 40-2 in the league, so there’s a lot to take away from that.”

Shortstop Shelby Weeks may have played her last game for Tower, but not before being named MAC Gold MVP for a third consecutive season and earning All-County, All-District and All-Conference honors.

Although Tower will be without Weeks moving forward, the future has the potential to be bright for the Titans. Tower was moved from the MAC Silver to the MAC Gold prior to the 2011 season, and Sell announced the Titans will be playing in the MAC Blue Division when their 2013 campaign begins.

He has already started to think about what may lie ahead, including what the move to the MAC Blue could mean for Tower’s softball program.

“It’s going to make us a better team, a better program, and I look forward to it,” he said. “I’m going to be losing a couple seniors: Shelby Weeks and Tori MacDermaid. Shelby Weeks (is) going to be very hard to replace; she’s been a four-year starter. In saying that, I do have the nucleus of my team coming back: seven sophomores and three juniors. My pitcher (Rachael Kopenick) will be coming back. There’s not enough words I can say about this young lady (and) the effort that she’s put in to become a better pitcher and softball player. Also have my sophomore, Sara Asmar, who’s going to help us the upcoming years.”
