WARREN — Back-to-back fifth inning home runs by Warren Woods Tower's Travis Terrien and Dan Newton proved to be the difference in the Titans' 4-3, district title-winning tussle with Harrison Township L'Anse Creuse.
The 2013 Michgan High School Athletic Association Division 1 district championship game took place June 1 at Tower.
Tower advances to play Warren Cousino in a D-1 regional semifinal, set for noon June 8 at Anchor Bay. Cousino (22-9) knocked off Royal Oak in its district final played June 1 at Cousino. The other half of that regional will feature Anchor Bay and either Clinton Township Chippewa Valley or Sterling Heights Stevenson. Stevenson and Chippewa Valley's district final takes place at 10 a.m. June 3 at Fraser.
Up 1-0 in the top half of the fifth, Tower's Terrien slammed a two-run home run over the left field fence to put the Titans (15-15) up 3-0 over the Lancers. Newton followed that up with a shot to virtually the same spot to put Tower up 4-0.
"I was just trying to get a double and get on base, but it turned out to be a home run, which is great," Newton said.
Newton's bomb ended up being the game-winning score, as L'Anse Creuse (20-14) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 4-3. The Lancers had runners on first and second with two out, but Tower relief pitcher Mike Cervantes was able to get out of a jam.
"He's a junior who's never pitched in a situation like this before. He had to settle down, but once he did, he got us a couple of big outs," Tower coach Leo Kondziolka said.
"We hung in there. We always felt like we could score some runs. Outside of the inning where we gave up the two home runs, we played very well defensively," Lancers coach Bob Walmsley said. "We didn't give them any runs, they earned them. As a coach, that's what you want."
Tower downed St. Clair Shores Lake Shore (13-13) 10-6 to advance to the district final. L'Anse Creuse bested Roseville High (10-8) 7-2 to get to the final.
