It’s that time again.
Very soon, medals will be awarded, records will likely be toppled, and bragging rights will be established.
The boys Macomb County Swimming and Diving Championship Meet is around the corner. Diving preliminaries kick things off at 6 p.m. Feb. 3 at Macomb L’Anse Creuse North. Swimming and diving finals begin at 11 a.m. the following day at the same location.
Individuals must meet certain standards to qualify for the swim finals, but every school may enter one team in each of the relay events.
If the competitiveness of last year’s event carries over even marginally, fans should expect an exciting show, as the top five squads finished within a mere 26 points of each other.
Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse took home the title last season, scoring 228 points. Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (210.5 points) was just behind in second, followed by Warren De La Salle (208), Romeo High (205.5) and Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (202).
Fraser coach Bob Ogilvy said he’s hoping his squad can crack that top-five group, but noted how tough the competition is annually.
“We use the county meet as a barometer to tell us where we are in the county and where we need to be going into the last month of the season,” he said.
“And it’s a good chance for the kids to swim against really good competition, because all the best competition in Macomb County’s there.”
Ogilvy tabbed Chippewa Valley, Utica Ford II and De La Salle as a trio of favorites heading into this year’s competition.
“(They) are probably some of the top teams in Macomb County, and they’re going to be the tough ones to beat,” he said.
