Top players in OAA girls basketball recognized by coaches for ’11-12 season

With the playing of the four state final games March 17, we officially bid farewell to the 2011-12 girls basketball season. With the conclusion comes the release of the Oakland Activities Association’s All-Conference teams.

“It was a great season for girls basketball in the OAA,” said Rochester Adams coach Fran Scislowicz, who was named Coach of the Year in the White Division. “The balance and competitive races were just fabulous. Every division came down to the last week. It was a fun year to be associated with this league.”

Red Division
Considered by some to be one of the toughest divisions in the state, the OAA Red left its mark on the season with some excellent basketball from start to finish.

Clarkston High survived the gauntlet to take home the top spot with a 12-2 record. In second place was Auburn Hills Avondale (11-3), followed by Lathrup Village Southfield-Lathrup (9-5), Rochester Hills Stoney Creek (7-7), Pontiac High (6-8), North Farmington (5-9) and Troy High (4-10).

West Bloomfield, which rounded out the standings at 2-12, proved just how tough the league was come playoff time, as the Lakers didn’t end their season until a six-point loss in the regional round of the Class A tourney.

All-Conference awards went to Delaney Kenny, Megan Hastings and Anna Manilla, Clarkston; Hannah Little and Loreal Farris, Avondale; Michele Hayes and Amber McCullough, Lathrup; Gabby Yurik and Lauren Voss, Stoney Creek; Amanda Miller, Pontiac; Jasmine Harris, North Farmington; Karin Moss, Troy; and Sydni Davis, West Bloomfield.

Clarkston’s Tim Wasilk took home Coach of the Year honors.

White Division
Adams rolled to the White title thanks to a 12-2 mark. Lake Orion High (10-4), Oxford High (8-6), Farmington High (8-6), Farmington Hills Harrison (7-7), Rochester High (5-9), Beverly Hills Groves (4-10) and Troy Athens (2-12) followed in the standings.

All-Conference nods go to Lauren Boyle, Taylor Houghtlin and Lexi Lewandowski, Adams; Nicole Krier and Marisa Secontine, Lake Orion; Shelby Davis and Michelle Gilmore, Oxford; Aaron Howell and Cherrish Willis, Farmington; Marissa Cotton and Tiera Parker, Harrison; Anne Tucker, Rochester; Jordan Blackwell, Groves; and Sinclair Russell, Athens.

Blue Division
Of the three divisions, the race in the Blue may have been the most intense.

Bloomfield Hills Andover secured the division crown with a 54-53 win against Ferndale High on the final day of the regular season, ending 15-1 in league play and one game ahead of Royal Oak High, which was 14-2.

Southfield High (12-4), Berkley High (9-7), Ferndale (8-8), Birmingham Lahser (7-9), Birmingham Seaholm (5-11), Hazel Park High (1-15) and Oak Park High (1-15) followed in the standings.

Andover’s Jeff Rubin was selected as Coach of the Year.

All-Conference honorees are Shannon Wilson, Rachel Rea and Jamie Lederman, Andover; Mariah Gardziola and Sami Stormont, Royal Oak; Mieana Gaines and Kiara Salisbury, Southfield; Diamond Wilford and Lucy McNally, Berkley; Janecia Jenkins, Ferndale; Suzanne Miller, Lahser; Lauren Yousif, Seaholm; Shelbie Farris, Hazel Park; and Jae-la Richardson, Oak Park.
