South tennis finishes third in the state; Liggett, North also participate in tournament

Local girls tennis teams completed their seasons in state final tournaments May 31-June 1 at various locations.
Grosse Pointe South had the strongest finish of local squads, taking third place after scoring 20 points at the Division 1 tournament at the Midland Tennis Center. Port Huron Northern won the Division 1 state title, finishing with 24 points. Farmington Hills Mercy took second place with 22 points.
South’s top-three finish was helped by the state flight championship won by No. 4 singles player Madie Flournoy.
Maggie Sweeney (No. 3 singles) and Brooke Willard (No. 2 singles) also helped pick up some points for South, with Sweeney finishing as state runner-up and Willard making it to the semifinals.
The No. 4 doubles team of Morgane Flournoy and Kelly Beardslee also made it as far as the semifinals for South.
In other local tennis action:
Grosse Pointe North finished in a 14th place tie with Fenton at a Division 2 tournament at Grand Blanc/Holly. The Norsemen came away from the tournament with a total of five points.
Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett finished in 19th place at the Division 4 tournament at Kalamazoo College. The Knights scored three points.

Romeo remained undefeated by defeating Macomb Dakota 26-14 in a Macomb Area Conference crossover that paired two of the top-ranked teams in Michigan. Romeo’s defense came into the game having surrendered just 13 points all season, and helped seal the win with a safety and interception return for touchdown by Brad Tanner in the fourth quarter. Romeo earned its first win against Dakota since 2010.
