Royal Oak Shrine volleyball falls in regional semifinal
Posted November 18, 2013
Royal Oak Shrine volleyball coach Bill Wolfe called this season one of the program’s best in a number of years.
The Knights came away with their first district title since 2005 before falling to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 25-7, 25-21, 25-11 Nov. 12 in a Class C regional semifinal.
“We thought we had a pretty good season going, and then when we won the district, that made it a really good season,” Wolfe said. “The girls had pretty good chemistry and got along all year. They had a pretty good dedication to getting better.”
The Knights finished the year 18-15-3 overall.
Against Liggett, which eventually lost to Auburn Hills Oakland Christian in the regional final, Wolfe said his squad didn’t play to its potential.
“They were a better team, they passed better than we did and they really got on a roll,” he said. “They just controlled the ball better than we did. They put a lot of pressure on us, and we didn’t swing enough to put pressure on them.”
In game two, Wolfe said sophomore Izzy Ray led the Knights.
“She served eight points in a row, so that made it close and brought it back to 20-20,” he said.
Shrine’s roster is full of juniors, with only one senior in Jasmine Bridges, who captained the team along with junior Irene Peaslee.
“(Bridges) was a good leader, and she was on varsity for three years,” Wolfe said.
In other volleyball action from across the area:
Birmingham Marian moved on in Class A, beating Clarkston High in four games for a regional title. The Mustangs went on to play Romeo High in a quarterfinal after press time.
Also in Class A, Farmington Hills Mercy fell to Livonia Stevenson in five games in a regional final after beating Grosse Pointe North in three games in the semifinal.
In Class B, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep continued its winning ways, beating Hazel Park High in three games for its second straight and seventh overall regional title in the program’s history.
Prep went on to play North Branch High after press time.
