GROSSE POINTE WOODS — No matter how the Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett baseball team did in a June 12 quarterfinal, one thing is for sure about the 2012 version of the Knights.
They like to have fun.
“Anything with this group is a good time,” senior pitcher Alex Daar said. “We like to win, but when we’re all together. It’s a good time.”
Winning certainly helps, and the Knights have done plenty of that this spring.
On June 9, the guys added another pair of victories, starting with a 3-1 win against Allen Park Inter-City Baptist and then a 12-0 defeat of Royal Oak Shrine in the regional final.
“This is huge,” Daar added after pitching a complete game against Shrine, allowing just three hits while striking out 10. “This is the point of the season where you have to battle, and we did that today.”
The Knights faced New Lothrop High in the quarterfinals, and with a win, they’ll head back to Battle Creek for a June 15 semifinal at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m.
The Division 4 final is set for 9:30 a.m. June 16 at C.O. Brown Stadium in Bailey Park.
“We’re having fun right now,” Cimini said. “This is a great group of guys that’s doing some good things.”
Liggett, which upped its record to 24-3 following the regional title, showed why it’s been such a deadly team since last spring.
After sneaking past Inter-City in a game Cimini said wasn’t really as close as the score indicated, the Knights wasted little time jumping on Shrine.
Daar got things going with a single and a run scored in the top of the first inning.
In the third, Mark Van Auk doubled and then scored on a Daar double.
Daar scored later in the inning, and Liggett led 3-0 after three.
Liggett added four runs in the fourth, one more in the fifth and four more in the seventh before ending the inning with the bases loaded.
“When you hit the way we did today, there’s not many teams that can beat us,” Cimini said.
North falls in regional final
The Norsemen softball team battled all the way to a regional final before falling to Garden City 4-3 in extra innings. North beat Detroit Renaissance 9-4 in the opening round of regionals. North hosted regionals June 9.
