Oakland County sisters take golf games to Symetra Tour
Posted June 24, 2014
Out on the course, playing professional golf isn’t all that much different for Christine Meier compared to her high school and college days.
Hit fairways, hit greens and make some putts.
But outside the ropes — even the ropes themselves — that’s where things get a little different.
“It was different with the whole setup. There are roped-off areas where only I could enter. It’s a lot more official, I guess, but it’s really exciting,” Meier said of her professional debut at the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship June 6-8 in Battle Creek as part of the Symetra Tour, which is the developmental tour of the LPGA.
Does she feel like a big shot?
“A little bit,” she said with a laugh.
Meier, a 2010 Rochester High graduate, has a familiar face to help her along the way.
Her sister, Amy Meier, who graduated from Rochester in 2009, is in her second year on tour.
Amy was on hand early in the week of the FireKeepers but withdrew due to an injury, one that she expects to fully heal.
Amy has two top-10 finishes on the Symetra Tour. Her best finish this season is a tie for eighth in Florida’s Natural Charity Classic. Her best finish in 2013 was a third place in the Credit Union Classic.
“I’m definitely more comfortable out there. You see the same players from week to week, and I have some friends out there,” Amy said. “You find your place and you find a rhythm. I definitely don’t feel like a rookie anymore, which is a big step forward.”
She also believes her sister has what it takes to make it.
“There’s nothing that she doesn’t know. Coming fresh off of playing in college, the only thing that is different is that we play for money,” Amy said. “She knows how to handle the pressure. She might have a couple of questions, but she’s doing a great job of figuring it out for herself.”
Christine admits there was a little to figure out before her first round. She had an afternoon tee time and decided to have some lunch in the clubhouse before heading out.
“All of a sudden, there were a bunch of tents around that weren’t there the day before. So I started texting my sister, ‘Do I need to do something else? Do I need to register again or check in somewhere?’” she said laughing. “I definitely picked her brain a lot.”
She eventually made the cut and finished 73rd in the event.
For the rest of the season, the sisters plan on traveling from stop to stop together in order to split expenses and spend some time together.
Though both led Rochester to state championships, and each won an individual state title, their college careers took them down different paths.
Christine played for Michigan State University and finished with the 10th lowest scoring average in school history.
Amy attended Ohio State University and was a two-time All-Big Ten selection.
Both have the goal of eventually playing on the LPGA Tour, which takes a top-10 finish on the Symetra Tour money list at season’s end or through qualifying school, which is how both qualified for the Symetra Tour.
“I know from my game, and when I’m completely healthy, I’m right there,” Amy said. “It’s all about consistency and shooting those low numbers.”
While the LPGA waits, the duo is enjoying their time together at this level.
“I don’t know if the feeling has fully set in that we’re both professionals,” Christine said. “We wanted to do this for so long, and I think it’s really fun, and I’ve enjoyed it so far. When I was in Battle Creek, I was playing a practice round and a little girl asked for my autograph. Things like that, it’s kind of neat to have those new experiences.”
“We love being on tour together,” Amy added. “This is kind of a dream come true for both of us.”
