The volleyball season has ended for local college teams, as Oakland University and Oakland Community College were both defeated in postseason play.
After making it all the way to a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II semifinal match, OCC lost to Cowley County (Kan.) Community College 3-1 Nov. 22 at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. Cowley went on to win the NJCAA D-II national championship.
OCC won a first-round and quarterfinals match to advance to the semifinals.
OCC (36-4) went on to lose a third- and fourth-place match 3-1 Nov. 23 against Johnson County Community College.
OCC’s Miranda Fuerst was selected to the All-Tournament team. Rebekah Brandel was rewarded for her play earlier in the month, as she was selected as D-II Player of the Week for Nov. 4-10.
OCC came away from its season with both a Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) tournament and a D-II NJCAA District “E” championship.
Oakland University’s season came to a close via a 3-1 loss to Cleveland State in a quarterfinal match of the Horizon League Tournament Nov. 22 in Milwaukee.
The Golden Grizzlies went 9-5 in their inaugural season in the Horizon League and went 15-14 overall. Oakland picked up regular-season victories against programs such as Rutgers and Syracuse.

Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day
Thanks to two early scores, some lock-down defense, and a touchdown with just 5:25 remaining in regulation, the Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day football team picked up a 20-13 victory against Milan High in a Division 4 regional final on Nov. 14 and earned this week’s Team of the Week honor. Country Day, which had outscored its opponents 78-7 in the district round, advanced to the state semifinals for the second year in a row. The Yellowjackets (11-1) face Flint Powers Catholic (10-2) at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at West Bloomfield High.
