Oakland County’s top grapplers battle it out

LAKE ORION — The 58th annual Oakland County Wrestling Tournament was held Dec. 15-16, with Oxford High taking the prestigious title for a second straight year.

The Wildcats topped 37 other teams to win, totaling 306 points in the two-day event held at Lake Orion High. Mirroring last season’s result, Clarkston High was the runner-up with 245 points.

The host school was third with 207, followed by Holly High at 205 and Walled Lake Central at 197 to round out the top five.

The rest of the top 15 saw Novi Detroit Catholic Central (159), Southfield A&T (142.5), Rochester High (137), Waterford Kettering (130.5), Rochester Adams (108), Rochester Hills Stoney Creek (105), Auburn Hills Avondale (100), Birmingham Seaholm (100), Ferndale High (96.5) and Hazel Park High (91).

Ortonville-Brandon was next with 90, in front of Farmington High (83), Birmingham Groves (76.5), Troy High (74), Novi High (65.5), West Bloomfield High (64), Troy Athens (63), Berkley High (60.5), Milford High (53), Waterford Mott (50.5), Royal Oak High (48), Walled Lake Western (48), Walled Lake Northern (45), Lakeland High (40), North Farmington (36), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (36), South Lyon East (32), Bloomfield Hills High (30), Pontiac High (24), Birmingham Brother Rice (23), Farmington Hills Harrison (23), South Lyon High (19) and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (19).

Here’s a look at each flight champion, along with the local grapplers who placed in the top eight of each class.

At 103 pounds, Stoney Creek’s Blake Noonan earned the top spot. West Bloomfield’s Austin Bashi took third and Rochester’s Kavan Troy was eighth.

In the 112 grouping, Walled Lake Central’s Sam Freeman took the individual title; Adams’ Anju Mangal notched third; Stoney Creek’s Andrew Hampton was fifth; Farmington’s Anthony Averiette was sixth; and Rochester’s Owen Fisher was seventh.

After winning at 103 last year, Walled Lake Central’s TJ Daugherty won the 119 crown. In the same class, West Bloomfield’s Brandon Munson took sixth and Adams’ Brady Vibert was seventh.

In the 125 class, Clarkston’s Mac Hanselman was the champ. Southfield A&T’s Terry Johnson tabbed fourth; Prep’s Alec Gaboury earned fifth; Berkley’s Luke Borman took sixth; and Bloomfield Hills’ Kobey Caldwell was seventh.

At 130, eight different schools from the C & G coverage area took the top spots. Hazel Park’s Joseph Eisho won the group, followed by Jake Justice (Farmington), Damon Dunbar (Groves), Jackson Vance (Seaholm), Brandon Troy (Rochester), Micah Woodruff (Walled Lake Western), Joseph Mason (Troy) and Scott Ingoglia (Stoney Creek).

In the 135 division, Southfield A&T’s Isiah Berry took the crown. Clarkston’s Ethan Polick was fifth; Avondale’s Adam Good earned sixth; North Farmington’s Scott Hampton grabbed seventh; and Rochester’s Aidan Fitzgerald finished eighth.

The 140 grouping saw Walled Lake Central’s Nick Freeman finish first. Rochester’s Ben Kable placed third; Ferndale’s Matt Ballard notched fifth; Walled Lake Western’s Vincent Savaya was sixth; Southfield A&T’s Dejon James grabbed seventh; and Troy’s Connor Anderson posted eighth.

The 145 class was won by Oxford’s Ryan Miller. Locally, Seaholm’s Nick Law was fifth; Adams’ Brendon Gibbons was sixth; and Walled Lake Central’s CJ Davidson was eighth.

At 152, Walled Lake Central’s Liam Kinjorski won the title and Avondale’s Torey Coleman tabbed fifth.

In the 160 division, Lake Orion’s Dylan Wellbaum was first. Groves’ Nathan Campbell was fourth and Stoney Creek’s Kevin Price was sixth.

Oxford’s Devin Trevino won the 171 grouping, while Ferndale’s Zoser Little was runner-up. Groves’ Jacob Smith finished third; Seaholm’s Mark Manzo placed sixth; West Bloomfield’s Mario Pallazola grabbed seventh; and Troy’s Zenon Stepien placed eighth.

The 189 class saw Holly’s Cade Dallwitz take the top step on the podium. Meanwhile, Athens’ Andrew Yan tabbed third; Ferndale’s Donovan Pitts-Reed was fourth; Royal Oak’s Jordan Hilgendorf notched sixth; Walled Lake Central’s Greg Zavalnitskiy earned seventh; and Harrison’s Luke Losie grabbed eighth.

At 215, Lake Orion’s Sam Kinne took first followed by Walled Lake’s Central’s Connor Merchant at the runner-up spot. Hazel Park’s Mason Young earned third; Walled Lake Northern’s Joe Dresbach finished sixth; Ferndale’s Angel Delfay-Marrero nabbed seventh; and Seaholm’s Daniel Harwood posted eighth.

At 285, Berkley’s Babacar Diop was the champion, while Avondale’s Shane Guberiu took third.
