Grosse Pointe North's Ali Scoggin serves up a point during regionals May 16. Scoggin won the No. 1 singles flight and she and her teammates, along with South's and Liggett's teams, are off to the state finals.

All three girls tennis teams from Grosse Pointe extended their seasons for a couple of more weeks, as Grosse Pointe South, North and Liggett all emerged from their respective regionals May 16-17 and will compete May 31-June 1 in the state finals.

The Blue Devils will defend their D-1 title at the Midland Community Center after winning the regional they hosted. North won the regional it hosted and will compete in the D-2 finals at Grand Blanc/Holly, and the Knights from University Liggett finished second in the Almont regional and will swing away in D-4 at Kalamazoo College.

The highly competitive South regional had three teams qualify on points. Troy High, which finished second, and Troy Athens will join the Blue Devils in the finals.

South had five flight champions in regionals and three runners-up. Troy High had three flight champs, and Athens had three flight finalists.

North was dominant in its D-2 regional, as well. The Norsemen came away with seven flight champions, including Ali Scoggin at No. 1 singles.

St. Clair Shores Lakeview was the second qualifying team in the North regional. The Huskies were runners-up in six flights, and the No. 4 doubles team won a regional title.

Liggett’s team finished second in the Almont regional May 17 to secure its spot in the final. The Knights finished as runners-up in five of the eight flights. Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart Academy won the regional after winning seven flights. Clarkston Everest Collegiate’s Carly Sutkiewicz was the regional champion at No. 1 singles and will represent her squad in the state finals.

South edged Port Huron Northern and Clarkston by one point for the D-1 title a year ago; North finished in 13th place in D-2 in 2012. Liggett did not qualify last season.

“We were in a regional with a lot of the top-10 teams in the state (last year), so that made it tough for us to qualify,” Liggett coach Cathy Hackenberger said. “We had some strong showing this year, and I’m glad we were able to go back (to the finals).”
