MACOMB TOWNSHIP — In all, 20 prep boys swim teams took to the water Feb. 2-3 for the annual Macomb County Championships, but it was one team that kept the crown as the county’s best.

Warren De La Salle won seven of 12 events and tallied 467 points to claim its sixth straight county title. Macomb Dakota notched 335 points to take second for the second straight year. St. Clair Shores Lakeview (192 points), Utica Eisenhower (175), and Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (167) and Fraser High (167) rounded out the top five.

The six consecutive county titles for De La Salle are a record.

“We train hard and set lofty goals — like being one of the best teams in the state,” De La Salle coach Jim Singelyn said. “We came in expecting to win another county title, and we’re glad we were able to get that accomplished.”

De La Salle’s Zach Milke earned Senior Swimmer of the Meet honors, setting county records in the 50-yard freestyle (21.45 seconds), 100 free (46.87) and 100 backstroke (51.67).

“(Milke) is swimming very well,” Singelyn said. “I think he’s really trying to leave his mark this year, being that he’s a senior.”

The Pilots set a new county record in the 200-free relay — with a team comprised of seniors Hunter Broski, Ben Rancilio and Daniel Frederick, and junior Michael McGinnity — with a time of 1:29.79. Frederick also established a new county record in the 200 free (1:43.58).

The Pilots won the 200-medley relay — with a team comprised of Milke and juniors Sam Streberger, Daniel Talbot and McGinnity — in 1:38.1; De La Salle (Milke, Rancilio, Broski and Frederick) won the 400-free relay in 3:12.90; and Pilots junior Justin Huttenlocher won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 377.50.

Fraser High sophomore Alexander Capizzo also set county records. He won the 200-individual medley (1:55.92) and 500 free (4:36.36) in record times.

Other event champions included St. Clair Shores Lakeview junior Chaz Lumpkin in the 100 butterfly (53.92); Macomb L’Anse Creuse North senior Stewart Nowinski (48.26) in the 100 free; and Dakota senior Zach Knott in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.87).

“It was very impressive to witness how well the swimmers performed today,” said L’Anse Creuse North coach Mike Owensby, who coordinates and hosts the event each year.

Other teams that earned points were Utica Ford II (149), followed by Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (120), Utica High (91), Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (79), New Baltimore Anchor Bay (74), St. Clair Shores Lake Shore (69), Warren Cousino (63), Romeo High (56), Sterling Heights Stevenson (46), Center Line High (20), St. Clair Shores South Lake (19), Sterling Heights High (18), Warren Fitzgerald (16) and Warren Mott (2).
