Local girls basketball teams set to hit the court for state playoffs

East Detroit High girls basketball coach Krysta Kreyger understands the element of unpredictability that the Michigan High School Athletic Association girls state basketball tournament can bring.

“Anything can happen (in the state playoffs),” said Kreyger, set to lead the Shamrocks into the postseason in her second year as coach. “Any team can have an off day and any team can have an outstanding day.”

Girls hoops team are set to test their mettle in the postseason beginning with districts, which run Feb. 25-March 1. Regionals run March 5-7, with the state quarterfinals taking place March 12. The state semifinals and finals are slated for March 14-16 at The Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing.

“It’s just a great time of year because you have to make sure you are paying attention to all the details and are prepared for anything,” Macomb L’Anse Creuse North coach Bob Johnston said.

The last local team to win a state title was Grosse Pointe North in 2008, when the Norsemen downed East Lansing 58-46 to clinch a Class A title.

Grosse Pointe South fell just short of a Class A crown last year, as the Blue Devils fell to 54-53 to Grand Haven in the Class A title game.

Grosse Pointe University Liggett has become a regular participant in the state finals, advancing to the Class C title game each of the last two years.

Utica High (Class A) and L’Anse Creuse (Class B) won state titles in 1999 and 1978, respectively.

“The tournament setting seems to bring the best out in teams and individual players,” St. Clair Shores Lake Shore coach Jimmy Roehm said. “I’ve seen so many kids find an extra gear … who then use that to jumpstart their AAU and senior season.”

The setting can also bring back memories, according to second-year St. Clair Shores South Lake coach Shay Lewis.

“I think about when I was playing in high school at Rochester Adams, and we were ranked No. 1 in the state and got upset in the (state) quarterfinals,” Lewis said. “Not winning a state championship still haunts me 20 years later, and I tell my girls to have no regrets. Play all out the entire game because the game you’re playing in could be your last.”

Coaches seem to think a number of things are necessary for a deep playoff run.

Kreyger believes making in-game adjustments is vital, while Roehm sees attention to detail on the defensive end as key.

“Especially in the girls game,” Roehm said. “Turnovers and defensive stops lead to a lot of easy baskets, which can put the (opposition) in a big bind.”

Johnston thinks outside forces come into play, as well.

“First, you have to have a little luck,” he said, “then you have to have great players and then you have to execute the things necessary to move forward.”
