LCN outlasts Cousino 42-37 in wild opener
Crusaders rally from 10 down at halftime in win
Posted August 29, 2013
WARREN — An interception by Macomb L'Anse Creuse North senior safety Kairos Bodley with 5:22 left in the third quarter of the teams' season-opening contest led to the touchdown that put the Crusaders in front for good in a high-scoring affair that saw LCN best Cousino 42-37.
The game took place Aug. 29 at Cousino.
Three plays after that third-quarter turnover, Crusaders senior quarterback Sean Koski hit senior wide receiver Connor Carbary for a 37-yard touchdown to put LCN up 28-24 with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter. The score capped a comeback that saw the Crusaders (1-0) fall behind 24-14 at halftime.
"I don't know what's with our team. We're like the cardiac kids. They hit us in the mouth. We got punched, and luckily, we just hit the ropes and didn't go through them," LCN coach Anthony Kiner said. "There's no backing down. We just keep moving forward."
The teams continued to trade punches in the fourth quarter. The Patriots used a 12-play drive to take a 31-28 lead with 11:13 remaining in the game. Cousino senior running back Michael Greer found the end zone on a 5-yard plow. LCN scored touchdowns with 9:19 remaining and 7:20 left to go up 42-31. Cousino would continue to battle, using a second Greer rush from 2 yards out to pull within five at 42-37. LCN would run out the clock to secure the win.
Cousino outgained LCN 380-362. Koski accounted for each of the Crusaders' six touchdowns, throwing for five and rushing for another. Warren Cousino junior quarterback Nick Palmer (in his first varsity start) totaled 383 yards, rushing for 196 and passing for 187. In addition to his two rushing scores, Greer caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Palmer halfway through the second quarter. LCN senior wideout Alex Bond caught two touchdowns.
"Obviously, we played a great first half. We just couldn't stop them in the second half," Cousino coach Mike Powell said. "They've got a lot of weapons on that football team, and we just couldn't stop them. I was pleased with our kids' efforts."
LCN will host Macomb Area Conference Blue Division rival Grosse Pointe South at 7 p.m. Sept. 6. Cousino next travels to Roseville for a cross-divisional matchup, set for 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
