Lantzy calls it a career
Eisenhower football coach Bob Lantzy, right, speaking with quarterback Joe Zerafa this past season, has retired after spending more than 40 seasons as the Eagles head coach.

Utica Eisenhower coach Bob Lantzy has retired, calling it a career after spending a little more than 40 years as the Eagles football coach.

Lantzy, the only varsity head football coach Ike has ever had, goes out on a high note after surpassing the 300-win mark this past season and leading the Eagles to the state semifinals.

“The main reason I picked this year, I can’t go out on better note,” the coach said. “We won three championships — the MAC, the district and the regional. We played in a great semifinal game. We had a great group of seniors, and the prospects for next year are still outstanding. It’s a great time to leave. Everything is still positive.”

In his final year, Lantzy led the Eagles to the Macomb Area Conference Red Division title, a district title and regional title before falling to eventual D-1 state champ Detroit Cass Tech 6-3 in a semifinal.

He leaves Ike with a 304-115-1 career record, 13 league championships, five district titles, seven regional crowns and four state finals appearances.

The coach says he’s going to spend his free time out in Arizona for part of the year, and catch up on some golf and fishing.

Lantzy called his time and the people he met at Ike “special.”

“I’ll miss it a lot,” he said.

Check out the upcoming Dec. 7 edition of the Shelby-Utica News, as well as back here on the web later, for a look back on the career, and what’s ahead, for the longtime coach.
