ST. CLAIR SHORES — Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse senior pitcher Sammi Mills showed why she is a Division 1 player in the team’s 6-1 June 1 win over St. Clair Shores Lake Shore in a Division 1 district final.

Mills in seven innings struck out 13, scattered three hits and allowed the one run. Hitting second for the Lancers, Mills in the top of the fourth inning got the hit that blew the game open — a two-out triple down the right field line to drive in three runs to give her team a 5-1 lead.

“I just felt relaxed when I was pitching because I knew my teammates would hit,” Mills said. “On the hit, it’s the same thing — I had been struggling a bit, so I just had to relax and I was able to get a big hit for my team.”

L’Anse Creuse (28-7) advances to take on the winner of a Utica High district in a regional semifinal at 10 a.m. June 9 at Macomb Dakota.

The win gave the Lancers their first district championship since 2015. The team fell in district finals in 2016 and 2017, losing to Lake Shore last season.

“It’s nice for (Mills) being that she’s the only senior,” L’Anse Creuse coach Lisa Downey said. “We’d been playing a little tense lately, especially at the plate. We weren’t getting timely, two-out hits and we did that today. This is good for our program. After the game I told the girls we need to win more district titles because they didn’t know how to act.”

The postseason championship adds to L’Anse Creuse’s list of accomplishments this season. The team went 10-0 in Macomb Area Conference Blue Division play to earn a third straight division title. The Lancers also eclipsed the 20-win mark for a sixth straight year.

L’Anse Creuse took an early 2-0 lead on a home run by sophomore infielder Cynthia Galvan in the top of the first.

“The pitch just looked so big and it was a pitch I was looking for,” Galvan said. “I was just waiting for a chance to do my job and I did it.”

The Shorians (7-17) cut the lead to 2-1 on a single to center fielder from senior outfielder Alyssa Agosta that scored junior utility player Kara Wolfbauer.

Following Mills’ three-run scoring hit, she would score on a wild pitch to give the Lancers a 6-1 advantage in the top of the fourth. Over the course of the final four innings, Mills, who will play at Central Michigan University, faced the minimum number of batters.

Lake Shore was after a second straight district title and third in five years. The Shorians lose four players to graduation: outfielders Elizabeth Gatto and Caitlyn Colley, infielder Jackie Miller and Agosto. The team has 11 players eligible to return, including freshman pitcher Emma Herbon, who started the district final.

“I’m proud of the girls,” Shorians coach Will Puvalowski said. “We gave L’Anse Creuse a really good game. They got two big hits from two really good players. We fought, though. I think our program is in good shape.”

Mills bookends her prep career with district titles. Following the June 1 win, she basked in the moment a bit before heading off for another big happening — her graduation.

“This feels really good. We weren’t able to get this done the last couple years,” Mills said. “This is a good way to go out.”
