ROSEVILLE — The St. Clair Shores Lake Shore softball team exacted some revenge on the team that ended its season in 2013 with a 10-4 win over Harrison Township L'Anse Creuse May 30 in a 2014 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 district championship game.
The Shorians (20-11) used a big seventh inning to pick up the win. Lake Shore plated six runs in the extra inning to take a 10-4 lead it wouldn't relinquish after the game was tied at four. The Lancers (20-12) beat the Shorians in 11 innings in a 2013 district final. L'Anse Creuse was going for its second straight district title.
Lake Shore advances to take on the winner of a district being hosted by Sterling Heights Stevenson in a D-1 regional semifinal set for noon June 7 at Anchor Bay.
"The girls have been working toward this all year. We've talked about this moment for a long time," Shorians coach Will Puvalowski said. "They were awesome."
"We tried to make sure the girls just had fun. A lot of times, people make the moment bigger than it is. It was important for the coaches to make sure the girls were relaxed and didn't put any extra pressure on themselves."
All of the runs Lake Shore tallied in the seventh inning came with two outs. Shorians senior third base Brooke Wauters plated what would be the winning runs with a two out, two RBI hit to start the rally.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Ratledge picked up the win for Lake Shore. Puvalowski said there was no other player he would have rather had in the circle.
"It feels good," Ratledge said. "This is a great thing to be a part of."
Several other district baseball and softball tournaments are set for May 31. For more information, check www.mhsaa.com.
