Lake Shore boys wins two in districts; South Lake, Lakeview ousted early in district round
Posted October 22, 2013
ST. CLAIR SHORES — The St. Clair Shores Lake Shore boys soccer team will look markedly different in 2014.
Of the 22 players on the Shorians’ playoff roster, 13 are seniors. The majority of those players have been a part of two straight Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 district titles.
At press time, Lake Shore (12-4-2) was still alive after downing crosstown rival St. Clair Shores South Lake 8-0 in a D-2 district semifinal played Oct. 16 at Lake Shore. The Shorians were set to take on either Marysville or St. Clair High in the district final Oct. 19.
The Shorians bested Warren Woods Tower 4-1 Oct. 14 in the opening round of the playoffs. South Lake received a bye in the opening round.
“This is really good group of guys who work well together, and they really want to succeed,” said Lake Shore coach Dave Lount, who has led Lake Shore to regional-final appearances in each of the last two years. “They’re not happy with just winning. They really want to play better.
“Hopefully, our success continues on (during the playoffs).”
After the district semifinal setback, Cavaliers coach Paul Voydanoff said he thought his team battled in the first half, yielding just two goals.
Lount said his senior class has impressed him. Lake Shore in the last four years has appeared in two regional finals and three district finals. Included in that group are three seniors who are also co-captains of the squad — midfielder/forward Joey Podsiadly, midfielder/forward Michael Swarthout and midfielder/defenseman Mike DeMara.
The Shorians in that span have also won two league titles and finished second in league play one other year.
“It’s a great group of guys. They’re all good friends. I’m just happy for them to have had that type of success.”
Voydanoff said the strength of his team lies in the sophomore class, including six players listed on the Cavs’ playoff roster. He said South Lake has 18 sophomores in its soccer program and that if those players return, the Cavaliers (4-12-0) should make a stronger showing in 2014.
Lakeview falls in district quarterfinal
The St. Clair Shores Lakeview boys soccer team saw its season end in a 1-0 loss to Fraser Oct. 14 in a D-1 district quarterfinal played at Fraser High.
The Huskies end the season at 7-9-2.
