The Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse softball team continued its banner year after taking home a district title following a 4-3 win over St. Clair Shores Lake Shore in a D-1 district hosted by Warren Woods Tower June 1.
The district championship comes after the Lancers (28-8 at press time) won their second Macomb Area Conference Blue Division title in four years. L’Anse Creuse went 10-2 in sharing the MAC Blue title with Warren Cousino.
The Lancers squared off against Warren Regina in a D-1 regional semifinal that took place after press time.
Lancers coach Lisa Downey, who has coached the L’Anse Creuse softball team for 15 years, said the title wins are great, especially when you consider half of the roster features freshmen and sophomores.
The L’Anse Creuse baseball team lost a tough 4-3 decision to Warren Woods Tower in a D-1 district final played June 1 at Tower. The Lancers (20-14) fell behind 4-0 before mounting a comeback that fell just short. L’Anse Creuse had runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth inning, but couldn’t get a run across the plate to tie the game.
Back-to-back home runs by Tower in the top of the fifth proved to be the difference in the game.
“We hung in there. We always felt like we could score some runs. Outside of the inning where we gave up the two home runs, we played very well defensively,” Lancers coach Bob Walmsley said. “We didn’t give them any runs — they earned them. As a coach, that’s what you want.”
Walmsley said his team had an up-and-down year that included some big wins and frustrating losses. He said he’s satisfied with the year his team had, considering, he said, it took his team about half the season to get things right on defense.
The L’Anse Creuse baseball coach said he’s encouraged by the future after starting two sophomores and a freshman in the district final. Walmsley added he could have started four sophomores in the June 1 game.
“We’ll be OK next year,” Walmsley said.
