It was an exciting weekend for Grosse Pointe South’s football team.
On Friday, the Blue Devils ended their regular season in impressive fashion with a 36-0 victory against St. Clair Shores Lakeview, posting their first shutout of the season.
Two days later, South learned that it will host Detroit Cass Tech in a first-round playoff game at 7 p.m. Oct. 26.
The Blue Devils will enter the game riding a five-game winning streak, during which time they averaged 32 points per game while holding their opponents to under 12.
South’s other regular-season accomplishments include winning the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division for the third time in the last four years with a 5-0 record, and their overall record of 8-1 is the best season the Blue Devils have had since 1989.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our kids, and my coaching staff,” South coach Tim Brandon said. “It was just one of those years where everything came together. The kids played for each other — they played hard. The coaches did an excellent job and coached the kids up. Everything came together, and that’s what caused us to have the success we had.”
Cass tech was 7-2 during the regular season.
Brandon likes the makeup of his team as it prepares to enter the postseason.
“We never give up,” he said. “No matter who we’re playing, what the score is. We had four come-from-behind wins this year alone. Our kids will always compete, and our coaches will always prepare them.”
In other local football news:
Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett will host Detroit Douglass in its opening-round playoff matchup. At press time, the date and time of the game had not been released.
Grosse Pointe North’s 29-7 loss to St. Clair Oct. 19 was the Norsemen’s season finale. The loss dropped the Norsemen’s overall record to 5-4 (3-2 MAC Blue) and took them out of the running to receive an automatic playoff bid.
