Grosse Pointe North gets past Sterling Heights in season opener
North defenders Lucy Dodge (24) and Maria Liddane converge on Sterling Heights High's Dayshia Vance during the season opener, won by North.

Maria Liddane scored 13 points and had 10 assists to lead Grosse Pointe North to a season-opening 50-32 victory against Sterling Heights on Tuesday evening.

Jayla Hubbard added 12 points and five rebounds for North, while sophomore Erin Armbruster scored nine points and collected seven rebounds.

North trailed 8-6 after the first quarter, but the Norsemen quickly began converting the open opportunities that they had while attacking the zone defense of Sterling Heights.

"I thought that in the first quarter that we had a lot of good scoring opportunities that we didn't score on, but then we started to loosen up. I think a lot of that was just nerves," North coach Gary Bennett said.

Sade' Lemons led Sterling Heights with 13 points and five rebounds. Julianna Trombley added five points, six rebounds and four steals for the Stallions.

North (1-0) will host Marian Thursday evening, while Sterling Heights (0-1) will play its next game on Dec. 10 against Romeo.
