Fall sports season just around the corner

We may still be stuck in the dog days of summer, but the start of the fall 2013 prep sports season will be here before you know it.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association released the schedule for the 2013-14 season. The sports season gets underway with the start of football practice Aug. 12. The first of each team’s nine contests takes place Aug. 29. Check the Aug. 28 edition for a full football preview section.
The 2013 MHSAA state football playoffs begin with pre-districts Nov. 1, with the Division 1-8 finals taking place Nov. 29-30 at Ford Field.
Incoming freshmen should check with their local school for information on physicals and the first day of practice.
Here’s a quick rundown of each fall schedule. Check out www.mhsaa.com for more on the location of the state finals in various sports.
Boys cross country
The boys cross country season begins with practice Aug. 14. The first of 15 dates, which include dual meets, league meets and quads, is set for Aug. 23.
Regionals take place Oct. 25 or Oct. 26, with the Division 1-4 finals slated for Nov. 2 at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.
Practice for the 2013 girls golf season begins Aug. 14, with the first of 16 regular-season matches set for Aug. 21.
Regionals take place Oct. 9 or Oct. 12. The Division 1-4 state finals take place Oct. 18-19 at four sites.
The last team champion from the C & G coverage area was Grosse Pointe South in 2011.
The first official day of practice for the boys soccer season is Aug. 14. The first of 18 regular-season games is set for Aug. 23.
The district playoffs take place Oct. 14-19, with regionals being slated for Oct. 22 and Oct. 26. The Division 1-4 state finals take place Nov. 2 at sites to be determined.
The last boys soccer champions from the C & G coverage area were Auburn Hills Avondale (Division 2) and Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day (Division 3) in 2011.
Girls swimming and diving
Practice for the 2013 girls swimming and diving season begins Aug. 14, with the first of 17 regular-season dates, which include dual and league meets, taking place Aug. 23.
Diving regionals are set for Nov. 19, with the Division 1-3 state finals taking place Nov. 22-23 at sites to be determined.
The last local team to win a state title was Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, which hoisted the trophy last season in Division 3, giving the program back-to-back state titles.
The boys tennis season gets underway Aug. 14. The first of 16 regular-season matches, which include dual, tri and league meets, is set for Aug. 21.
Regionals take place Oct. 10 and Oct. 12, with the Division 1-4 state finals being set for Oct. 18-19 at sites to be determined.
Local programs to keep an eye on include Detroit Country Day and Cranbrook-Kingswood, which has won the last five Division 3 titles.
The 2013 volleyball season kicks off with the first day of practice Aug. 14. The first of 18 regular-season dates is Aug. 23.
Districts are set for Nov. 4-9, with regionals taking place Nov. 12 and Nov. 14. The 2013 Class A-D state semifinals and finals are slated for Nov. 23 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
Local teams have won three of the last four Class A titles: Macomb Dakota in 2012 and Bloomfield Hills Marian in 2009 and 2010.
